Life on the farm

Bent Tree Farms is located on 780 beautiful acres in southeastern Oklahoma. Our purpose is to provide locally grown, naturally pastured meats in an ethical system that benefits the animals, the environment, and the people involved.

Our animals are rotationally grazed to mimic the movement of herding animals in nature. They are moved daily to fresh pasture with clean water that’s provided by our underground water system. Our happy animals live their entire lives here at the farm, and we are confident of wholesome goodness of the meat they provide.

Our Animals

Hereford cattle were chosen as the flagship breed for Bent Tree Farms. Specific lines of Hereford were selected; the line was developed during the days when this breed built the beef industry in the United States. This selection assures a gentle, easy fleshing animal that thrives on natural pasture rather than in a feedlot.

Our sheep are a cross of St. Croix, Dorper, and Katahdin. We continually select animals that are naturally parasite-resistant and thrive on natural pasture. We strive to develop animals that require as few outside inputs as possible.

Our Soil

Our wellness begins within the soil. Healthy food comes from healthy soil. At Bent Tree Farms, we strive to constantly improve the health of our soils. We use no chemicals as fertilizer, nor do we incorporate weed fertilizer. Our solution to a natural fertilizer is utilizing our animals and our carefully managed grazing strategies to bring our soils to life with microbial activity. A truly living soil is what produces truly healthy food.

A lifelong fascination with the ability of nature to sustain us has culminated in the vision Dr. Marchbanks has for Bent Tree Farms. Along with his wife, Susan, a certified Master Naturalist, the Marchbanks are interested in promoting local foods as well as foods that are produced without harmful chemicals being involved. You are not only what you eat, but also what has been eaten by your source of food. Our food must be protected from the use of poisons so as to protect those that it sustains.

“When I open a package of meat from Bent Tree Farms, I know what is in it and, just as importantly, what is not in it.”

As manager of Bent Tree Farms, Jonathan oversees daily operations of Bent Tree Farms and is assisted by his wife, Miriam. Jonathan and Miriam see farming as so much more than an occupation – it is a lifestyle led by dedication, ethics, and heart. They are passionate about stewarding the land in a way that honors the biological cycles set forth by our Creator, and highly values integrity, intentionality, and transparency in the way farming is done.

Working hard to always care for animals in a holistic, low-stress environment, they strive to produce a product for our community that is healthy, clean, and nourishing.
